Mid-size sedans continue to be one of the most popular types of vehicles to find on the road due to their size and fuel-efficiency. The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta and the 2018 Toyota Camry are two rivals that are competitive on the market as they continue to evolve with their performance and design. When you're looking to purchase a new sedan, there are a few notable differences between both options.

Specs at a Glance

Performance

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which offers a pleasant drive that provides competent handling. It offers powertrains and basic structures that haven't changed, which gives drivers peace of mind knowing that the performance continues to remain consistent and solid. The powertrains in some of the trims offer acceleration that is responsive and smooth. You don't have to press on the pedal too hard to pick up speed when you're merging onto a highway or are trying to change lanes.

The Toyota Camry offers dynamic steering and suspension with a smooth ride that is laid-back. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has 203 horsepower with 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, the fuel-efficiency isn't as impressive with the V6 engine because it gets 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The brakes are also strong and don't require much force. It has decent stopping power and comes to a halt at 123 feet at 60 mph, which is still not as competitive compared to similar sedans in the industry.

Safety

The Volkswagen Jetta received excellent scores with a five-star rating by the NHTSA. It's active safety features include a forward-collision warning, front parking sensors, blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic monitor, and front automated emergency braking.

The 2018 Toyota Camry is built with a pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, and a backup camera to reduce the risk of a collision. Option features to add on include cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.

Exterior

The exterior design of the new 2018 Volkswagen Jetta allows it to remain conservative but still modern and stylish with minor changes that have been made. A new chrome grill is added, which allows the car to look stylish and more luxurious. Black trim is used on the windows, and a black radiator grille is also an addition, making the car look more menacing compared to its former models. It's also larger with extra length and height, which allows it to be packed with more cargo space and a more spacious cabin. It's a vehicle that will age well and won't look outdated in the coming years.

Toyota took a few risks with the new 2018 in an attempt at making the reliable car model look more edgy and sporty. The car has sharp lines that make it look expensive from a distance, but some of the features cheapen the experience. The doors are noisy and open too wide, which can make it challenging to shut the door once you're inside.

The glass of the windows is also lower to give the illusion that the cabin is sunken into the body of the car. A bold character is also added to the length of the body, which causes the vehicle to look disjointed and have less appeal compared former models released by the car brand.
