What's New For the 2019 Volkswagen Passat?

In 2019, one of the biggest changes in the Passat is that there are now only two trim options for consumers to choose from, as opposed to the seven trim levels that were available in 2018. Although Volkswagen slimmed down the lineup this year, it did not cut corners on amenities. The two models available this year are the Wolfsburg Edition and the SE R-Line, which is combination of the SE and R-Line trims from 2018. Another notable change is that this year, the Passat trades its former six-cylinder engine for a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Rich Features Across Two Trims

This model year, there are two trim levels available in the Passat. The base model is called the Wolfsfang Edition, which replaces the base model called the "S" from previous years. Even though the Wolfsburg is technically a base model, you'd never guess it based on the number of amenities and features it has. This year, the Wolfsburg Edition comes standard with a 6.3-inch touchscreen and 17-inch wheels, which is an upgrade from last year's model. Other upscale features you'll find standard on the Wolfsburg this year include a push-button start, leatherette seats, and a keyless entry. On cold days, the heated side mirrors and heated front seats are a welcome amenity.

In addition to these features, the Wolfsburg Edition also has optional accessories and packages for giving you an enhanced ride, including larger 18-inch wheels and a power-operated sunroof. At first glance, you'll be able to distinguish the SE R-Line by its redesigned bumpers, which have been changed to have a more dramatic appearance this year. Enhancing the SE R-Line exterior are standard LED headlights and tail lights, which were only available as an add-on amenity previously. Also standard in the SE R-Line this year are more safety features including lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The audio system has been updated in this trim level to a premier Fender sound system. Throughout the cabin, ambient interior lighting adds a bit of luxury as well as practical lighting.

The infotainment system in this trim level features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as device support and connectivity. Completing the SE R-Line standard features are power-operated side mirrors and a tilt-sliding sunroof. As with the Wolfsburg Edition, there are additional add-on features and packages that you can get to enhance your ride in the SE R-Line.

How is the Performance of the 2019 Volkswagen Passat?

2019 Volkswagen Passat Front GrilleIn 2019, the simplified trim lineup also comes with a simplified choice of engine. This year, the one and only engine in the 2019 Passat is a 2.0L, turbo-charged, four-cylinder engine that produces a maximum of 174 HP and up to 184 LB-FT of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with various driving options, including a nimble Sport mode, to help you get where you need to go. Paddle shifters are optional features to enable faster gear shifting and give you more control of your ride.

Volkswagen Passat Safety Features are Abundant

2019 Volkswagen Passat Rear ViewThe Passat stands out in many categories, and safety is one of them. This year's Passat earns a five-star crash test award for the active and passive safety amenities that it offers. To keep occupants protected if the Passat is hit, there is a safety cage with front and back crumple zones to help absorb energy from a crash. If the car is involved in a collision where the airbags are deployed, an Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) deactivates the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and turns on the hazard lights. A variety of driver assistance features, including lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control, are designed to keep you from getting into an accident in the first place.
